Small Group English Classes in Hong Kong: How Small Is Small Enough?

Small group English class in Hong Kong

Small group English classes in Hong Kong can mean very different things. At one school, “small” means eight students. At another, it means twenty. This guide explains how class size affects your learning, how small group private English classes compare with one-to-one lessons and regular group classes, and how to decide which one suits you.

For many adult learners, a group of two to eight students works well. Smaller than that, you get more attention but pay more per hour. Larger than that, you usually speak less.

Every school says its classes are small. It is a bit like every restaurant saying its food is fresh. So we will be specific: at Q Language, group courses have no more than eight students, and small group private classes are made up of you and one to five friends.

The short answer: how small is small enough?

There is no single perfect number. The best size depends on your goal, your level and your timetable. As a general rule:

  • One student: the most attention and the most flexibility, at the highest hourly cost.
  • Two to six students (a private group): more people to speak with, and lessons still designed around your group.
  • Up to eight students (a regular course): the lowest hourly cost, with enough speaking time for steady progress.
  • More than eight: cheaper still in many schools, but you will probably spend more time listening than speaking.

Three kinds of English class compared

At Q Language you can choose from three kinds of class. Our regular intensive General English courses are small by most standards. Small group private classes are smaller and more flexible. One-to-one lessons are the smallest of all.

  • Regular group course (Intensive or Semi-Intensive)
    Size: up to 8 students
Schedule: fixed timetable, new courses start every month
    Tuition from: HK$4,540 to HK$12,100 a month
Best for: steady progress at a lower hourly cost
  • Small group private
Size: you and 1 to 5 friends
Schedule: your choice, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm
    Tuition from: HK$450 an hour
Best for: friends with the same level and goals
  • One-to-one private
    Size: 1 student
Schedule: your choice, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm
    Tuition from: HK$390 an hour
Best for: exams, interviews and specific goals

Why class size matters: speaking time

You learn to speak by speaking. That sounds obvious, but in a large class it is easy to spend most of the lesson listening to other people. Here is a simple example. Imagine a 60-minute lesson in which the students speak for 30 minutes in total, and the rest of the time the teacher is explaining. This is how that speaking time is shared:

Students in the classSpeaking time for each student (example)
8About 4 minutes
65 minutes
4About 7 to 8 minutes
215 minutes
1 (one-to-one)30 minutes

This is an example, not a measurement, and real lessons vary. But it shows the point. In a smaller group, each student speaks more and receives more correction. More speaking also means more mistakes, which sounds bad and is actually the idea. A mistake that nobody hears is a mistake nobody can fix.

What small group private classes are

A small group private class is a class made just for you and your friends. If you have one to five friends with the same needs and ability, we arrange the class for you. You choose General English or Business English, and the lessons and materials are designed for your group. Here is what that means in practice:

  • A flexible schedule: classes can be arranged Monday to Saturday between 8am and 8pm, for 1 to 20 hours a week.
  • Tailored lessons: topics can include socialising, travelling, presentations, and job or university interviews.
  • Exam preparation: for exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and SAT.
  • Native English teachers: who help with speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Materials included: designed for your group.

The most important words are “the same needs and ability”. A group works best when everyone is at a similar level and wants the same thing.

Small group or one-to-one: an honest comparison

Neither option is better for everyone. Here is an honest comparison.

Small group private

  • Good: you practise with real people, which is closer to a real conversation.
  • Good: studying with friends can keep you motivated.
  • Good: the lessons are still designed around your goals.
  • Not so good: the lesson has to suit everyone’s speed, and everyone has to be free at the same times.

One-to-one

  • Good: every minute of the lesson is yours, and the pace is yours too.
  • Good: the timetable fits only you.
  • Not so good: the hourly rate is higher, and you practise only with your teacher. Our guide to one-to-one English classes explains how these lessons work.

A small group has one hidden risk. Friends do not always have the same level, the same free evenings or the same energy in week three. Choose your group the way you would choose a travel companion: honestly.

How much do small group English classes cost?

Small group private English starts from HK$450 an hour. One-to-one lessons start from HK$390 an hour. Regular group courses start from HK$4,540 a month, and our Intensive 15 and Intensive 24 courses work out at roughly HK$115 per lesson hour. Tell us your group size, level and goals, and we will give you a clear quote. You can contact us at any time.

If your group is a whole team from the same company, our corporate English training may be a better fit.

How to choose

Ask yourself five questions:

  • What is my main goal? An exam, a presentation or an interview often needs one-to-one lessons, or a very small group with exactly the same target.
  • How close are our levels? If they are far apart, one-to-one is safer.
  • Can we all meet at the same times? If not, one-to-one is easier to arrange.
  • Do I need more speaking practice or more attention? More speaking practice suggests a group. More attention suggests one-to-one.
  • What is my budget? Group classes cost less per hour. Private classes cost more but are designed around you.

If you are not sure, you do not have to choose forever. Students can combine private lessons with a group course, or start with one and add the other later.

What small really means

Class size is a number. What you really want is attention: someone who listens to what you actually said, and tells you how to say it better. That can happen in a class of eight, if the teacher is good and the class is well run. It can fail to happen in a class of two. So when you compare schools, ask how many students there are, and then ask the more important question: how often will the teacher hear me speak?

We have a view, naturally, but we would rather you chose the right size of class than the cheapest or the smallest. If you would like advice, contact us or message us on WhatsApp. We are at 14/F Wing On Cheong Building, 5 Wing Lok Street, Central.
